Saw this about a week ago on DVD, anyone else here have a chance to check this out? I know Vietnam comes up on here from time to time, and while I am no expert, it seems like this movie went out of it's way to get all the input it could from the experts. And, you gotta love the Sam Elliot character in this :)

I'm sort of sketchy on details, but it's based on the book "We Were Soldiers Once, And Young," written by an officer who saw alot of combat in Vietnam.. Look the book up.
I heard him interviewed on Fresh Air a while back (Late last year? I dunno), and it was a grisly interview.

Yeah, the book was by General Hal Moore (though a Lt. Col. at the time of the movie). The DVD had a nice little behind the scenes/making of documentary where they talked about (and in some cases interviewed) the real life person. The battle that is the subject of the movie was the first actual battle between Vietnamese troops and US soliders. Unlike most depictions, this conflict took place in the Vietnamese Highlands and was between Vietmanese Army "regulars." A massive victory for the US in the end, but it may have been the high point of the war too.

Moore was involved in the making of the movie, too, so I would suspect there was a fair amount of accuracy to it.
When it first came out, the History Channel did one of their "History or Hollywood" shows on it, where they had a staff of actual LZ X-ray participants watch the movie and discuss how accurate they thought it was. They said that while it did contain some elements of increased drama (an event that comes to mind was when they finally made their way out to the cut-off group, and they couldn't find them until someone stuck their hand up from the dirt, when in reality they weren't hard to find at all), the movie was pretty accurate.

That movie pretty much owns. I saw it in basic training with all the other trainees and permanent party. I can't explain how different it is to watch ANY movie in an environment like that, let alone We Were Soldiers and Blackhawk Down...but it was freaking INTENSE. Lots of "HOOAH"ing going on and lots of silent lulls

Great movie. Goes to show we owe our vets a LOT for the crap they endured for our freedoms.
Saw it in the theater. When he goes to the memorial at the end, the emotions began. Men and women alike were crying leaving the theater.
